Distribution Real-time GPS Systems vs. Data-logging GPS Systems

Unlike data-logger systems that are uploaded at the end of the day, Varga’s real-time system is in constant contact with our GPS server and progress can be viewed at any point during the distribution.

All GPS tracking systems are not created equal. Listed below are some key points to consider when looking at a provider who is using a GPS tracking system in the delivery of your front door marketing campaign.


Data-logging System:

  • GPS units are sent with walkers to track their progress throughout the day.
  • Some versions of the data-loggers are “click” per door. This version’s performance relies on the walker to habitually click the button while walking. It also doesn’t take data points at pre-determined intervals.
  • Data loggers must be tethered to a computer — one by one — at the end of the day to download the data points that have been captured during the distribution.
  • Only after the data is downloaded can users see how well the intended distribution area was covered and determine which walker was involved in a reported incident.
  • Inexpensive to operate.

Real-time System:

  • GPS units are sent with walkers to track their progress throughout the day.
  • The GPS units are constantly in contact with a GPS server which is collecting the door hanger distribution data in real-time.
  • Crew leader can see each walker’s real-time data from a computer connected to the server over the internet (a laptop connected to the internet via a wireless broadband card in our case).
  • At any given moment an auditor can see where a walker is and where they have been during that day. This allows quick and easy determination of a walker if involved in a reported incident.
  • Throughout the day the historical data for all units is accessible in one view to get very clear picture of the door hanger distribution before the day is complete.
  • Real-time systems can utilize geo-fences. A geo-fence is a mechanism that alerts an auditor to a GPS unit’s location when it is outside of a pre-determined area. In our case, one of the geo-fence applications we employ is the outside border of the door hanger distribution area. We get notifications if a walker leaves the delivery area so we can bring them back in immediately.
  • Expensive to operate.

To maximize the impact of GPS in distribution it is clear that a real-time system is considerably more effective and useful. The only downfall is that it is more costly to operate and maintain a real-time system than to use a data-logger system.
